The Outer Path (外道, Gedō) is the seventh path, an ability granted to the wielder of the Rinnegan. With the Outer Path, the user is able to control life and death by reviving the dead, bind and restrict foes, as well as create and control the Six Paths of Pain.

Overview

With the Outer Path, Rinnegan wielders are able to control six bodies separate from their own, each of which possess a Rinnegan of their own and are able to use one of the Six Paths' abilities. Each "path" relays visual information to the original body, as do the creatures summoned through the Animal Path technique and the King of Hell,[1] which possess Rinnegan of their own. To control the bodies, they would each be pierced with chakra receivers, which allow the original body to transmit chakra directly to them, most effectively done by transmitting from a high location or remaining close to the bodies. A more powerful binding can also be used to control the bodies, in which chakra chains form between the receivers and the hand of the one controlling them.

Said to exist outside the realm of life and death, Nagato could use the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to resurrect the recently deceased.[2] The souls of these people would be released from the mouth of the King of Hell and return to their bodies. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kabuto Yakushi made note of how he could have Nagato kill the jinchūriki temporarily, store their souls in the King of Hell and then revive them at a later time.[3]

Trivia

  • Gedō (外道; Literally meaning "Outer Path"), derived from the Sanskrit Tīrthika, refers to any doctrine which "treads the outer path" to enlightenment. This is opposed to the teachings of orthodox Buddhism (the "inner path"), and is thus considered misguided and heretical.
  • The Demonic Statue of the Outer Path may be related to this ability, due to the name.
